Where are you going, where have you been?
"Where are you going, where have you been?" is the name of a short story of a girl who is 15 years old. Joyce Carol Oates is the writer of this story and she implies readers that this 15 years old girl is a beautiful but selfish. She is selfish because she thinks that she is more beautiful than her mother. Because of this situation story starts with argument between Connie and her mother. Later than she met with a man who is more or less 30 years old named Arnold Friend. And he wants to rape her and he does everything to convict her. I think Joyce Carol Oates picked the name Arnold Friend to show how names can be tricky. Also Arnold shows three numbers that are 33,19,17. I think 33 symbolizes the age of Arnold and other numbers symbolizes ages of girls who were raped by him.

Hi Can,
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you're posting about our story.
Can you explain what you mean by your comment about Arnold Friend's name being tricky? How do you interpret his name?
What's your personal reaction to Connie? Do you sympathise with her character?
